Abstract: This thesis presents three empirical essays on economic growth, environment and technical
progress. The first uses Granger causality in panel data to explore the causal relationships
between economic and environmental variables. The results show that the effects of scale and
technique are the main propagating channels of the emission flow. The second chapter makes
an empirical investigation of the Green Solow model using non-parametric and semi-parametric
techniques. The results are consistent with the hypothesis of declining marginal productivity of
capital, the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) and the convergence in emissions of CO2.
However, there is no evidence of EKC and convergence in emissions of N2O and CH4. The
third essay investigates the hypothesis of induced environmental change by testing Granger
causality between oil price and productivity in the United States between 1949 and 2015. The
results support the hypothesis of technical change induced by energy cost

Abstract: The business fairs are spaces in which an array of companies acting in the same
sector gets together with the goal to promote their products or services. Besides the
exhibitors there are many other actors, such as the organizer, suppliers, sponsors,
visitors, among others. The goal of this study was to analyze the contribution of
business fairs to establish relationships that support joint actions among the
exhibitors. The study was delimitated to metal mechanic companies that exhibit in
business fairs. The research was characterized by a qualitative and exploratory
approach. The data were collected by means of semi-structures interviews, done with
twenty companies in the west of Santa Catarina and north of Rio Grande do Sul. The
interviews were analyzed with the use of comparison, categorization and codification.
The results led to the construction of a framework that presents aspects of the
business fairs associated with the establishment of relationships among the
exhibitors. Aspect 1 is related to the Interaction Mechanisms used to exchange
information in the business fairs. As a result, it was evaluated that the formal
mechanisms are: business rounds, technical lectures, opening with cocktail, events,
catering, coffee break and dance. The informal ones are: visits/chats, stands
observation, cards exchange, lunch/dinner, meeting outside the fair and in alternative
places. Aspect 2 refers to Motivational Factors to perform joint actions among
exhibitors. In this item, complement to the business, access to a strong buyer
exhibitor, strengthening of the company, technology development, marketing
opening, consolidation of the product in the market and financial return were found as
motivational factors. The Joint Actions developed among exhibitors from their
participation in business fairs, as well as identifying the integration level that exist
among the companies performing the action, correspond to Aspect 3. The following
joint actions performed by the exhibitors in the metal mechanic sector were identified:
indication of other exhibitors, supplier prospection, potential client prospection and
experience exchange (networking); dealers prospection and joint exportation
(cooperation); joint participation in fairs, product development, joint sale,
fusion/acquisition potential, new company (collaboration). To finish, Aspect 4 of the
framework is regarding the Elements resulting from these relationships that consist in
characteristics or attributes of the relation from the beginning, what is born from the
relationship established among the companies. It was identified: trust, information
exchange, financial return, collaboration, affinity, compromise, equity (win-win
negotiation), business complement, personal relationship development and govern
regulation that turned out to be an impediment to the relationships. Thus, this
research constitutes a contribution to scholars and business people, since it
systematizes in a framework the Aspects of business fairs associated with the
establishment of relationship among exhibitors.

Abstract: The theme of this Dissertation is the architecture for Early Childhood Education environments. It
seeks to reflect on which conceptions of the built environment of an Early Childhood school
contribute to children development. It aims at producing design propositions for Early Childhood
schools, centered on children desires and demands and on the context of the North Region of Rio
Grande do Sul, in order to promote environments that act as educating agents. It is a qualitative
research from a study case in a Municipal School of Early Childhood Education. Thus, based on the
Experiential Approach and the Embodied Observation during the walkthrough, interviews, drawings,
photographing, memory game and conversation circle, the fieldwork prioritized listening to the
children and the environmental experience of the observer together with the occupants. The
bibliographic review, which is aligned with Vygotsky, pointed out that children develop from the
relationships and interactions built in their socio-cultural environment. The research pointed out that,
although school is an adult-domain territory, children, through their interactions and games, explore
creatively the environments that mark their spatial experiences. The design propositions are directed to
the conception of environments which: promote interactions and games child/child, child/adult and
child/environment; support comfort, motor development and ability, so that they can establish
relations and educating experiences. It is expected to contribute for design conceptions of Early
Childhood schools which respond better to children rights of learning and development.

Abstract: Considering the current situation, where expectations of radical changes, whether due to environmental, economic, or political factors, are present in most analyzes and forecasts, the present Thesis seeks to situate within this context the proposal for the constitution of Educational Territories, based on a notion that can be translated as the archetype of transformation itself: magic. Such a choice is appropriate because, starting from an empirical basis developed in activities carried out with children, magic presented itself as a recurrent cognitive resource, as necessary, for the reinvention of itself in the face of changing scenarios. In this sense, it is proposed that cities and architecture have always been part of a kind of wünschelrute (magic stick), which connects the fields of the mind and the things of the world, expanding them. Thus, for the operation with the concept of Educational Territories, at the present time, a posture that is assumed as a bridge between magical and concrete thinking is taken as necessary. For the construction of this argument, two simultaneous archaeological operations are carried out, one of knowledge, and the other, urban, with the geographic section of both the city of Erechim (RS), which is singular for the purposes of such a speculative operation. In this city, located in the north of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, based on a colonial project based on the local version of Positivism, Castillism, evidence of the meeting between the Jewish kabbalah, Amerindian shamanism, and aphrodiaspore mythology can be suggested. The supports of this suggestion are different concrete aspects of morphology, topography, toponymy, and architectural landmarks, so that it becomes possible, from this reading, to reinvent the “metaphysical infrastructures” of the city. The investigation procedure of these indications takes place through a playful look, decentralized between discovery and creation, whose method derives from exploratory experiences, developed in games in an Extension Project, with elementary school students, in the same city. In this sense, the present Thesis is also about childhood, without necessarily being about children, but about the return to a magical experience of cities and ideas, as a playful and cognitive strategy for survival in the current urban context, which seems to be at the mercy of a disruptive move. Although the properly social aspects inherent to the theme are not secondary, the present Thesis traces an outline that is accompanied by fundamentals arising from philosophy, notably from currents linked to Philosophy of Mind and Ontology, as it understands that this must be the theme of the theme “ educational territories ”, today: no longer a problem exclusively of urban social policy, or of the epistemological orientation of education, but of the founding encounter of institutionalized spaces, between mind and world. In the Conclusion, the assessment of this conjunctural context is resumed, which made the work as a whole turn to the type of approach that operates. The conclusion obtained shows that the changes, especially those resulting from technological advances, are accompanied by equally sensitive changes in the flow of information, and also in all the social activities that depend on them, such as politics and education. As these are changes based on the creation of an immaterial communicational environment, cyberspace, the invention of its counterpoint, urban territories as educational means, emerges, either as resistance, adaptation, or reference for assessing changes in progress. It constitutes, therefore, the natural counterpoint to a crisis, which is not strictly educational but concerns the institutional representation of knowledge, and the metacognitive processes it engenders, the invention of forms and ways of thinking.
