Abstract: In the current context of climate change, extreme events are intensifying and causing greater damage and losses on a global scale; therefore, studies in Geographical Climatology are becoming increasingly necessary. The focus of this research is on drought patterns and minimum rainfall extremes in the Uruguay River Hydrographic Region (RHU), taking into account recent records of more intense droughts during the summers of 2020 to 2025 in different areas of the Basin. This is related to the impacts of drought on rural areas and urban water supply, with a view to ensuring Water Security for the 16 Basin Committees of this Hydrographic Region. It is important to note that each of these has its own socio-spatial particularities, such as: (i) rainfall regime, (ii) vegetation type, (iii) territorial extent, (iv) number of municipalities, (v) population density, among others. These are some of the elements that highlight the multiscalar nature and complexity of the subject. The overall objective of this research is to analyze rainfall variability in the Uruguay River Hydrographic Region (RHU), focusing on the characterization of rainfall patterns and the occurrence of droughts. The methodological procedures were carried out through the collection and organization of daily rainfall data from 17 meteorological stations distributed across the RHU territory, covering the period from 1991 to 2020. The analyses and quality control were performed using six climate indices on the Climpact platform: (i) PRCPTOT (annual total precipitation); (ii) CWD (consecutive wet days); (iii) R95p (very wet days, extreme precipitation); (iv) R99p (maximum extreme precipitation); (v) CDD (consecutive dry days); and (vi) SPI/12 (12-month Standardized Precipitation Index). The second stage of the analysis involved mapping the spatial variations of the indices for each station. Next, a detailed assessment was carried out to identify the number of stations and the years with above-average values, as well as the maximum values recorded at each station during those years. The analysis of rainfall variability in the RHU revealed important patterns of consecutive dry and wet periods between 1991 and 2020. The results indicate a trend toward an increase in dry days in some areas, particularly in the middle section of the basin, and point to an intensification of drought events. The lowest precipitation records were concentrated in the northern region of Santa Catarina and in the locality of Palmeira das Missões, in Rio Grande do Sul. The study enabled the identification of trends in drought patterns that should be considered in the planning of public policies aimed at climate risk adaptation and mitigation. Finally, it highlights the need to strengthen water management among the 16 Basin Committees and the 347 municipalities of the RHU, with a focus on the region’s water security.

Abstract: This study focuses on the debate about the elements of the soundscape in Chapecó, Santa Catarina, and aims to outline how sounds and noises interact with subjectivity and the ability to apprehend this landscape. The objective, based on a cultural approach to the landscape category, is to analyze the relationships between the senses, perceptions, and well-being within this landscape. Through the perception and succession of daily experiences, we explore evidence that relates these events to the promotion of well-being or health issues. We also investigate how musicality, as a shaping agent of the landscape, interferes with the dynamics of sound interpretation. The research development is based on a case study, where we conduct phonographic fixations as portraits of the landscape. Concurrently, interviews with the local population were carried out, and in a third stage, the recordings were presented along with a questionnaire to identify if there is an orientation towards certain emotions based on Russell's circumplex test. The foundations of representation theory enable, within a cultural geography approach, a discussion on how subjectivity interferes with this dynamic. With the research considerations, we raise as results elements that add to the discussion of the relevance of sonic landscape elements in people's lives, and how the listening entity relates to space. We cite the debate on the interaction of silence, where we question studies that point to the restriction of sound volume as a resolution to problems pertinent to sonic ambiance; the emulation of the soundscape virtualized by technological tools; and the classification of sounds into cultural entities as an effective tool to advance the debate on soundscape considering subjective and symbolic aspects. Finally, we instigate the debate of the soundscape as a complex formed not only by sounds in space but by the human and social capacity for appropriation and interpretation: soundscapes are within people.

Abstract: Studies linking vegetation and climate have proved to be efficient tools for paleoenvironmental reconstructions, using palynological analyses of sediments. This dissertation sought to investigate the paleoenvironmental conditions of the Quaternary period, based on the analysis of pollen grains and spores found in sediments from the plateau area of the state of Paraná. The methodology included collecting sediments through boreholes, followed by chemical processing and qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results show that, from the end of the Pleistocene to the Tardiglacial (~17,183 to ~13,578 years BP), lower temperatures prevailed, indicating a colder climate than today, with predominantly grassland vegetation and local humid conditions sufficient to maintain water tables. Between the Tardiglacial and the Climatic Optimum (~13,578 to ~5,928 years BP), there was an increase in humidity, although this was interspersed with periods of dryness. From the Climatic Optimum to the present (~5,928 years BP to the present), there was a progressive increase in humidity, favoring the expansion of the Araucaria Forest and the expansion of the Humid Field areas, reflecting current climatic conditions.

Abstract: This thesis explores the evolution of the information technology (IT) industry in the city of Chapecó, located in the western region of Santa Catarina, analyzing the relationship between local socio-spatial transformations and the emergence and evolution of software companies. The analysis is based on the theoretical perspective of Milton Santos, which emphasizes the importance of understanding the parts of the whole in order to comprehend the development of a territory. The methodology employed involved a qualitative approach, with semi-structured interviews conducted with entrepreneurs, representatives of business associations, researchers, and professors in the IT field, while also including quantitative analyses on the sector’s growth, using data related to the number of companies, professionals employed in the area, remuneration, among others. The work is organized into three chapters, in addition to the introduction, with the first addressing the socio-spatial formation of Chapecó throughout the 20th century, followed by a synthesis and analysis of the software companies' paradigm in the city today, and finally, a discussion on the different microperiods of IT companies in Chapecó. Among the main results of the research, the demonstration of the existence of different microperiods during the development of information technology companies from their inception to the present moment stands out, as well as the highlighting of the fact that the geographical space of Chapecó, its socio-spatial formation, and the city's absolute and relational position were important factors for the growth of the companies, along with a discussion on the real importance of formal education during the sector's transformation.
