Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the anaerobic digestion of pig
slurry in a system of piglets production (UPL) and evaluate effluent quality for use as
organic fertilizer. The work was performed in an UPL with 2544 animals that send their
waste to a digester - modified Canadian model. Was estimated a residence time of 20.2
days. Several physical, chemical and biological parameters at the inlet and outlet of the
reactor were evaluated. The results showed a high dilution of the waste compared with data
reported in literature. High removal efficiencies of COD, total solids and volatile solids
were observed - 72.8, 56.9 and 47.5%, respectively. From the application of the material
conservation principle was estimated a production of cell biomass (sludge) of 0.709 g C/L
of treated effluent. The specific biogas production was estimated as 0.338 Nm3 CH4/kg SV.
The observation of the solids present in the input and output of the system allowed
concluded that biogas is produced from the volatile solids and that, when in suspended
form, they must dissolve in the liquid phase before conversion to biogas. The digester
effluent showed about 1 wt% of nutrients whereas that in the sludge these values reach
about 2wt%, making its application more favorable as agricultural fertilizer.
