Abstract: Talian is a Brazilian language that emerged from contact among Northern Italian linguistic varieties especially those of Venetian origin and Southern Brazilian Portuguese, and is spoken by Italian-descendant communities in southern Brazil. Although its development has not been based exclusively on orality, but also on written practices, radio constitutes an important domain for its circulation, where spontaneous and highly interactive linguistic practices are manifested. This study aims to describe and analyze the multifunctional behavior of the discourse markers adesso, anca, cossì, giusto, lora, nò, and si, originally adverbial and adjectival forms in radio-broadcast Talian, from the perspective of the North American Functionalist approach, with particular attention to processes of contact-induced grammaticalization resulting from language contact between Talian and Brazilian Portuguese. The study is based on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of a corpus consisting of radio programs broadcast in Talian. The results indicate that the recurrence of certain discourse markers is associated with the expansion of their pragmatic-discursive functions, revealing patterns of multifunctionality. Of the 209 tokens identified, lora/alora is the most frequent marker, followed by si and nò, whereas giusto and cossì display significant productivity in the textual and interactional organization of discourse. The findings reveal a predominance of the interpersonal domain, with nò, si, and cossì functioning mainly in interpersonal negotiation, followed by the textual domain, in which discourse markers such as lora/alora and giusto contribute to discourse organization. The ideational domain, represented by anca and adesso/desso, exhibits lower productivity. These patterns point to processes that may be described as contact-induced grammaticalization resulting from the influence of Brazilian Portuguese, the majority language, whose increasing presence in the repertoires of Italian- descendant communities exerts continuous and progressive pressure on Talian. Such processes are fostered by the public, mediated, and partially monitored nature of radio orality, which combines planned or semi-scripted segments with moments of greater interactional openness, where the effects of language contact on the functional behavior of the analyzed items become more apparent. The data suggest that Talian constitutes a dynamic and emerging linguistic system, shaped by language use and contact, with radio serving as a potentially central space for the circulation, diffusion, and stabilization of innovative linguistic practices

Abstract: This study investigates the language vitality of spoken German in the municipalities of Itapiranga/São João do Oeste (ITA/SJO), Mondaí (MON), Palmitos (PAL), and São Carlos (SCA), located along the Uruguay River in western Santa Catarina, Brazil. In these communities, although German is no longer the exclusive language of communication, it remains present in diverse and dynamic social practices, reflecting both the persistence of tradition and adaptation to new sociolinguistic realities. The study is guided by the following research question: how do speakers maintain, use, and perceive the German language in contact with Portuguese? The main objective is to research the vitality of spoken German based on the perceptions of its speakers. To achieve this goal, the study aims to: a) verify how speakers name the languages they speak; b) analyze the use of spoken German in contact with Portuguese across the four research sites — ITA/SJO, MON, PAL, and SCA — considering the diagerational, diastratic, diasexual, and religious dimensions; c) describe speakers’ perceptions and beliefs regarding spoken German in their communities; and d) identify actions aimed at maintaining the German language in the investigated localities. This sociolinguistic study is grounded in the assumptions of Pluridimensional and Relational Dialectology (Thun, 1998, 2005). Data were collected through participant observation and 32 interviews conducted in German with speakers selected according to diatopic, diastratic, diagerational, diasexual, and religious dimensions. Documentary sources and metalinguistic comments were also considered, encompassing the metareferential dimension. The results indicate that the majority language is predominantly referred to as Brasilionisch, whereas the minority language is identified as Deitsch and Deutsch, terms mainly associated with Catholic and Lutheran speakers, respectively. Regarding language use, the findings reveal greater use of German among younger speakers and among less educated participants, especially in contexts such as local government offices and commerce. Greater linguistic vitality was also observed in ITA/SJO and SCA, where Catholic speakers were interviewed. Concerning language perceptions, German is regarded as a prestigious language; however, many speakers point to its ongoing replacement by Portuguese. Only one of the investigated locations, São João do Oeste, currently presents institutional language policies aimed at maintaining German, such as language co-officialization and its inclusion in the school curriculum.

Abstract: This dissertation analyzes discourses by and about the monument O Desbravador, located in Chapecó, Santa Catarina, Brazil, with the aim of interpreting the processes of meaning production that participate in the construction of the city's official memory and historical narratives concerning its colonization and constitution, considering the effects of meaning produced by these discourses and the ideology that permeates them. The study is based on the hypothesis that the monument, in articulation with the institutional discourses that signify it, functions as a discursive device for the monumentalization of memory, producing effects of evidence and naturalization of a narrative linked to the colonial imaginary, centered on pioneering spirit, work, and progress, while simultaneously operating through constitutive silences that displace or erase other forms of historical inscription. Situated within the field of Discourse Analysis, the study mobilizes the articulation between language, ideology, and memory. The analytical path is organized around three axes: monumentalization as a discursive event; the relationship between body, text, and urban imaginary in the symbolic construction of the monument; and the ideological mechanisms that sustain processes of exclusion and silencing. The corpus consists of the monument in its nonverbal materiality, understood as a discursive body, as well as institutional discourses that attribute meaning to it, such as official documents, promotional materials, and public statements. The analysis is developed through an interpretative gesture that articulates different signifying materialities, considering the relationship between the visible and the sayable, as well as their conditions of production. The results indicate that the monument operates as an artifact of memory that stabilizes a dominant version of local history associated with the valorization of progress and pioneering from a Eurocentric perspective, while simultaneously displacing historical conflicts and territorial disputes. It is concluded that monumentalization is not limited to a commemorative gesture, but rather constitutes a discursive process of producing and regulating memory, inscribed within ideological relations that organize urban space and the constitution of identities. This research contributes to studies of discursive memory and to the debate on the construction of more plural and inclusive memory policies.
