Abstract: This project focuses on the photographic monitoring of wild mammals in the Industrial District of Realeza, Paraná, Brazil. The objective is to record, identify, and organize images of the species that use this area, evaluating the local diversity. It involves a careful and patient approach aimed at revealing the wildlife that persists amidst increasing urbanization. Mammals play essential ecological roles, including seed dispersal, population control, and the maintenance of trophic balance. However, these functions have been increasingly threatened by habitat fragmentation, the reduction of natural areas, and the uncontrolled expansion of urban centers. As a result, wildlife faces constant pressure, compromising the survival of many populations. In this context, non-invasive methods have become increasingly important. Photography and video recording emerge as safe, accurate tools that do not directly affect animal behavior. These methods enable the development of biodiversity inventories while generating visual material with scientific, educational, and environmental awareness value. The study was conducted over a two-month period, with weekly field visits to strategic locations within the district. The collected images were compiled into an illustrated catalog. Species identification was performed using field guides, specialized literature, and official databases, such as those maintained by the ICMBio and the IUCN. The expected outcomes include expanding knowledge of the local mammalian fauna, supporting conservation initiatives, and encouraging the community to develop a greater awareness of biodiversity preservation.

Abstract: Livestock production in southern Brazil depends on strategies that ensure a year-round supply of forage. The use of winter forage crops for silage provides an alternative for production systems, offering high-quality roughage and mitigating the effects of seasonality. Management practices, such as the use of growth retardants, can alter the morphological and productive characteristics of plants, thereby influencing the quality of the material intended for silage. The present study, which included different winter forage crops black oats (Avena strigosa), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and rye (Secale cereale) aimed to evaluate the productivity and quality of silage produced with and without the use of a growth inhibitor. The experimental design was completely randomized, comprising three forage species, with and without the application of a growth inhibitor. The experimental area was divided into 12 plots, each measuring 10 m in length by 8.0 m in width. The species exhibited similar dry matter yields and accumulation rates. Black oats and rye had greater height and growth rates than wheat. In terms of structural composition, rye had a higher proportion of stems, while wheat had a higher proportion of leaves. The use of the growth inhibitor influenced only the pH value of the winter forage silage. Winter forage crops have proven to be viable alternatives for silage production in southern&#xD;

Abstract: Once the need for euthanasia has been established, it is essential to assess the animal’s welfare and quality of life, avoiding unjustified delays that may prolong suffering. Knowledge of the most common diseases leading to euthanasia, as well as animal characteristics such as species, breed, sex, and age group, contributes to a better understanding of the factors involved in diagnosis. Furthermore, this information may assist veterinary professionals in guiding owners regarding preventive measures and early disease detection. Data were obtained from the medical records of dogs and cats treated at the University Veterinary Hospital Unit of the Federal University of Fronteira Sul, Realeza Campus, Paraná, Brazil, between 2020 and 2025. The results showed that, among the animals attended, 31 underwent euthanasia, including 22 dogs (70.96%) and 9 cats (29.03%). Among the euthanized dogs, 13 were males (59.09%) and 9 were females (40.90%). Among the cats, 5 were females (55.55%) and 4 were males (44.44%). Regarding breed distribution, 13 dogs were mixed-breed (65%), followed by the Chow Chow breed (10%). Among cats, 85% were mixed-breed and 15% were Siamese. The ages of dogs ranged from 2 to 17 years, with the highest percentage between 6 and 10 years of age (47.36%). Cat ages ranged from 1 to 12 years, with 83.33% between 1 and 5 years of age. Concerning the reasons for euthanasia in dogs, neoplasms (45.45%) and neurological disorders (18.18%) were the most prevalent, followed by trauma (9.09%) and other conditions with lower occurrence rates. In cats, traumatic injuries were the leading cause (33.33%), followed by neoplasms (22.22%) and other diseases represented by a single case each. In this context, the present study aimed to identify the causes of euthanasia and characterize the profile of dogs and cats submitted to euthanasia, considering species, breed, sex, and age, as well as to relate the diseases to the Five Freedoms proposed by the Farm Animal Welfare Committee.

Abstract: The indiscriminate and irresponsible use of antibiotics today represents a major challenge for both human and veterinary medicine. The emergence of bacterial strains resistant to conventional therapies makes it necessary to search for new therapeutic options for the treatment of infectious diseases that pose a risk to One Health; among these, phytotherapy stands out. Currently, several plants are being studied for their antimicrobial action. Peppermint essential oil (Mentha-piperita), a plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family, contains compounds such as menthol and menthone, which stand out because they have several therapeutic applications, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, and analgesic properties. In this study, peppermint essential oil was used against strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella flexneri, Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus cereus, pathogens of great importance to human and veterinary medicine. The work was carried out between May 2025 and April 2026 at the Federal University of the Southern Frontier (UFFS), Realeza Campus, PR, Brazil. After standardization of the inoculum, assays were performed in triplicate to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), and the results were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis. The MIC and MBC values obtained ranged from 0.04882% to 0.78125% against all evaluated pathogen strains, revealing, through the MBC/MIC ratio, a predominantly bactericidal profile. E. faecalis and B. cereus strains showed lower bactericidal concentrations (MBC 0.78125%); MIC analysis revealed that bacteria of the genus Streptococcus showed greater sensitivity to inhibitory screening. The results obtained in this study demonstrated that the essential oil exhibited antibacterial activity against the evaluated bacterial strains, evidenced by the observed MIC and MBC values. The variation in sensitivity among microorganisms indicates that the efficacy of the essential oil depends on the bacterial species analyzed. Thus, the essential oil shows itself as a potential candidate for the development of products with antimicrobial activity for medicinal purposes.
