Abstract

The Galileo Case has as its backdrop the reformation and its implications on the role of the Catholic Church in the 16th and 17th centuries. The reform triggered a series of events that led the Church to replace the social and cultural changes that redesigned the European world. During this period, important scientific advances – some of which counted with the participation of members of the Church itself-emerge and begin to change the understanding of the world of the people who lived there. Galileo has been elevated to an extraordinary level of rational appeal; However, they seem to be fine human attitudes that lead to condemnation by the Church. In other words, Galileo might not have been judged by their scientific propositions, but rather, for his arrogance and disrespect toward a fragile entity by the context of the time. In addition to Galileo, it is important to mention the actions of other characters, such as Christopher Clavius and Pope Gregory XIII, who worked in the current calendar system used in the West and which may have been based on heliocentrism, which would strengthen the hypothesis that the Church is not opposed to the new system.
