This dissertation aims to describe and analyze aspects of German-Portuguese bilingualism in German-Brazilian speakers living in Saudades-SC, and ItalianPortuguese in Italian-Brazilian speakers living in Nova Erechim-SC. In order to highlight two aspects of this bilingualism: the degrees of competence in the four language skills and the functions for which these languages are used, we will analyze the linguistic phenomenon according to Mackey (1972). We, therefore, want to have a perspective on how well speakers master their immigration varieties, if they understand and speak, or if they also read and write, or if they just understand and prefer not to speak; and when, in what contexts and situations they use them and with whom. The work is based on the theoretical-methodological principles of the multidimensional and relational dialectology (Thun, 1996, 2005, 2009, 2010), which contemplates the variational space in different dimensions. In this research, we take into account the following dimensions: diatopic (Saudades-SC and Nova Erechim-SC), dialingual (German-Portuguese and Italian-Portuguese), diagerational (GII [55 years old] and GI [18 to 36 years old]), diastratic (Ca [with higher education or more] and Cb [with no schooling or schooling until high school]), diassexual (male and female) and diaphasic (questionnaire, free conversation, field notebook and text for reading and for writing). Through the application of part of the metalinguistic questionnaire of the Atlas das Línguas em Contato na Fronteira project (2013), adapted to the reality of the informants, plus part of Lara’s questionnaire (2017), we interviewed eight bilingual informants in each community. In order to test bilingualism, in addition to the questionnaire, we used the techniques of free conversation, field notebook, reading and writing a text. The analysis of the data led us to find that it is more common for German-Brazilians to consider themselves bilinguals in the language of immigration,if compared to Italian-Brazilians. Regarding the degree of mastering language skills in immigration languages, we found that the most developed skills are speaking and listening, but many informants, especially Italian-Brazilians, tend to develop reading and writing skills. Concerning the functions for which the languagesare used, we realized that it is the German-Brazilians who use the language of immigration within the family and in public spaces the most. Thus, there are divergent paths traced between the ethnic groups analyzed. While the German-Brazilians keep their immigration languageusing it more in their everyday life through orality, the Italian-Brazilians start a trajectory towards the formalization of their immigration language in Nova Erechim, proposing the maintenance of this language through the teaching of reading and writing skills.pt_BR
