Geografia e cinema: paisagens do medo em filmes de terror bruxólicos

Abstract

The present work consists of the approximation of Geography and Cinema, using concepts of landscape, fear, landscapes of fear and the film genre terror in order to understand the construction of a landscape of fear in terror films linked to the figure of the witch. We analyzing three films: The Blair Witch (Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, 1999), The Witch (Robert Egger, 2016) and The Wretched (Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce, 2021). For that, bibliographies and theoretical references were used, therefore, the films were viewed with a phenomenological and interpretative analysis, describing the building of the landscape of fear built in its own filmic space, a landscape filmic of fear, thus being an approach, with qualitative character. In this way, it was understood that a film of the horror film genre that carries the witch figure intrinsically related to a forest landscape, has cinematographic and cultural clichés, with the use of sound, imagens, symbols and legends common to the real geographic space, and with the massification of works that contain elements of theses imagens it is possible or not to uses allegories to identify a possible fear in society in the face of the witch; the fear of the feminine, the fear of nature, the fear of pagan cultures, the fear of losing one child, yet the figure of the witch can also represent positive allegories depending on her narrative film context.
