Abstract/Resumen: The succession in family farming is an issue that has been getting attention, as well as it raised concerns and discussions, because of its importance to the future of itself. The factors that may be leading to the decline of the succession process related to the leave of the youth from the rural areas might be associated to the migration to urban centers in the search of better economic and social conditions, lack of public policies directly related to them and also the unpreparedness of the successor over the generations. The lack of social reproduction in family agriculture is a concerning matter, because this form of agriculture is responsible for producing the food that feeds the Brazilian people, as well as it aggregates the national GDP with its surplus. Family farming is a form of agriculture that values family, work and the environment. Different hypotheses about the real reasons that may be leading the young people to leave the farm have been created. This study aims to investigate the main reasons that are influencing young people to stay or not in the succession of farms. This study used the case study method, with a descriptive exploratory approach, conducted in the city of Cunha Porã-SC. The study found out that 64% of young people are determined to stay, and it is believed that this is due to the fact that the young people have autonomy on the analyzed farms. This autonomy, with the parents in the management of the property, associated with the leisure opportunities, personal income, family environment and socioeconomic relationships they experience are the main elements observed by the young when deciding to stay or not on the property. Thus, it is concluded that the rural succession is an issue of utmost importance, especially for family farms, because it is directly related to its social reproduction. It is refered, as a solution to the problem, to the combined work on the property, in the family and in society, encouraging young people to stay in the field, therefore enabling the strengthening of family farming.
