Abstract: The world has been focused its attention to the sustainability, the future existence of the planet, and the people’s welfare. This search takes into consideration not just the economic, but also the social and environmental aspects. In this context are the bioactive plants, if preserved, can help in the maintenance of health, which is the most important, and an option of income specially for small holding farmers of our country. Brazil is one of the countries which has the biggest biodiversity of the planet and also an enormous popular knowledge, the grow and the use of these plants. The Alto Uruguai Gaúcho shows a very good condition for still conserve a good deal of native vegetal essences and also because there are many peasants in the rural area who have a wide knowledge about these plants, related to the grow and the use. In spite of this favorable screen, two aspects must be taken into consideration: the lack of interaction between the popular and scientific farmer’s knowledge about the bioactive plants and their poor enterprising view about the productive chain. This study aimed at making available theoretical and scientific references about the drying of the Red Aroeira – Schinus terebinthifolius, a very common plant around the region which has a wide range of usages and a great demand of the market. Furthermore another aim was to study the possibility of structured and organize the productive chain as an alternative to generate new jobs and income to the farmers. The study of the Red Aroeira leaves drying considered five temperatures: at shadow 40ºC, 50ºC and 60ºC and green leaves in two moments of harvesting flourishing/fruition and post-fruition. Based on the results quantity of oil extracted from the treated leaves it is suggested that the best time to collect is pos-fruition and the more adequate temperatures for drying is 40ºC and 50ºC in the time of flourishing/fruition is between 50ºC and 70ºC post-fruition. The study of productive chain was based in questionnaires handed to farmers, consumers, and industries and also to people of the region who have knowledge about the subject. Based on results and information it is possible to verify that even though the farmers have a great knowledge about the bioactive plants they don’t have any commercial knowledge about them. It was also noticed that the rural exodus, the farmer’s ageing, and the lack of the young interest about the subject may break the future of the productive chain. Finally it is possible to conclude that the productive chain of the bioactive plants in the region is completely disorganized and may be an alternative to the familiar peasants just in medium and long terms. If, of course with the support of technical orientation, teaching, researches, and public investments and the effective adoption of Phitotheraphy at SUS.
