| Resume: | O artigo discute as conseqüências epistemológicas da adoção de um conceito de desenvolvimento sustentável que pressupõe explicitamente que a biosfera e as sociedades humanas são sistemas complexos e abertos. Argumenta-se que a Teoria da Complexidade e o Realismo Crítico constituem-se em abordagens fundamentais para potencializar as contribuições da ciência ao enfrentamento do desafio da sustentabilidade. |
| Abstract: | The article discusses the epistemological consequences of adopting a concept of sustainable development that explicitly presupposes that the biosphere and the human societies are complex and open systems. It is argued that the Complexity Theory and the Critical Realism are fundamental approaches for enhancing the contributions of science to the challenge of sustainability. |
