Abstract: The water is part of the basic needs of human beings, but due to its pollution and contamination, it is usually necessary to treat the water supply, however, the installation of a Water Treatment Plant (ETA) by conventional system is not a reality for rural communities and isolated properties. In this sense, the present work aimed to analyze the water quality of a rural community, pre and post implementation of the Granular Activated Carbon Adsorption Column (CALF-CAG) on the site, in order to verify its efficiency, as well as the compromise with what is established with the Ministry of Health (MS) Consolidation Ordinance Nº 05/2017. For this purpose, a CALF-CAG was fabricated, with a nominal diameter of 100 mm, an approximate total volume of 18.800 cm3, a surface application rate (TAS) of 1 m3 m-2 d-1, and piezometers for cargo loss. At the bottom of the CALF-CAG were placed 15 cm of rolled pebbles to form the support layer and, above this, 50 cm of CAG, coming from the babassu epicarp with granulometries of 2,00 mm; 1,40 mm; 1,19 mm e; 0,425 mm. CALF-CAG was installed downstream of a water tank, which supplied the CALF-CAG by gravitational force, and a water tank downstream from CALF-CAG for the purpose of collecting water after treatment. The efficiency of the CALF-CAG was evaluated by pre and post-treatment considering the following parameters: temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductivity, salinity, hydrogenation potential (pH) and loss of load, every 48 h in situ; and for total solids, color, turbidity, absorbance, total coliforms and Escherichia coli samples were collected every 48 h and stored under refrigeration (< 4 ºC) for ex situ analysis in the Laboratory of Water and Ecotoxicology of the Federal University of the Southern Frontier (UFFS) Campus Cerro Largo / RS. Thus, it was observed that the CAG washing was not efficient in removing impurities, since the color and turbidity values at the exit of the CALF-CAG were much larger than in the entrance, this problem, after the backwashing, was solved. In both periods of operation, there were variations in the loss of load, due to climatic variations. Due to the low turbidity the clogging occurred after 92 days, and after backwashing, the operation had to be waxed because of eutrophication. The water without any treatment of the rural community present quality within the required by the Consolidation Ordinance Nº 05/2017 of the MS, except for total coliforms and Escherichia coli. In the first step after treatment, there was a reduction in temperature, OD, electrical conductivity hydrogenation potential, absorbance; there was an increase in the following parameters: apparent color, turbidity and total solids; and for salinity the lowest variation occurred. After the backwashing, there was a reduction of OD, electrical conductivity, hydrogenation potential, total solids and absorbance; an increase in parameters temperature and salinity; apparent color and turbidity were not variable. In the agrotoxic analyzes, the concentrations were within the limits allowed by Consolidation Ordinance Nº 05/2017 and by Ordinance Nº 320/2014 of SES. The CALF-CAG was efficient in reducing pesticide compounds in most analyzes. However, it was observed that the desorption of agrochemicals occurred together with the increase of total solids present in the raw water, demonstrating that they compete with the pesticides even already adsorbed in the CAG. Thus, it can be said that, in general, the adsorption technology was efficient in reducing the physical, chemical and agrochemical parameters of the supply waters of the rural community. However, it is suggested that the structure of the carrier layer, such as the addition of sand prior to CAG, be performed to verify if the trawl of CAG particles is reduced.
