Author: Zabot, Gisele Fabiana

Abstract: One of the current challenges of our society is linked to the correct use of soils. In this sense, we aimed to verify whether the modes of traditional handle of soils by farmers are or not suitable for that specific kind of soil. This study was performed on a farm area belonging to Barra do Rio Azul, a city located in the north of RS state. The physical and chemical characteristics of the soil demonstrated a Chernossolo-kind soil. The declivity of the area was also calculated, and its value was lower than 8%; thus, there was not the need of constructing terraces. The densities and porosities of the soil were also evaluated in layers of 0-10 m and 10-20 m in four plots: grains plantation, fruits cultivation, forest and pasture. The water infiltration rate in the soil for each plot was evaluated as well. The densities of the soil, in the four plots, have increased by distancing the profundity from its surface. Notwithstanding, we observed the inverse for the porosities; they have decreased by distancing the profundity from its surface. Such conditions have influenced the water infiltration rate in the soil.
