Abstract: | In order to evaluate the effect of different soil covers on agronomic characteristics of beet (Beta vulgaris L.), an experiment was carried out at the Federal University of Fronteira Sul, Campus of Laranjeiras do Sul - PR. The experimental design was a randomized block with 5 treatments and 5 replicates, composed by 4 different soil coverages: oat straw (Avena sativa), mucuna (Mucuna aterrina), branch and leaves of cassava (Manihot esculenta), sawdust (Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze) and the control treatment no cover. The harvest was performed 62 days after transplanting, and the following parameters were evaluated: root length (CR), root diameter (DR), fresh root mass (MFR), above ground fresh mass (MFA), root dry mass (MSR) and above ground mass (MSA). It was observed that the treatments with soil cover with branches and leaves of cassava, mucuna and oat straw presented higher MFR, MFA, MSR, MSA, DR and CR. The treatments with sawdust and control showed lower averages for all variables evaluated. The treatments that influenced the highest productivity were the cassava, mucuna and oat covers. |
