Abstract/Resumen: The objective of this work was to estimate the growth and productivity of the tropical grass of the Giant Mission (Axonopus catharinensis), from September 2014 to April 2015, the species comes from the Vale do Itajaí SC, where it is found growing spontaneously. The work was conducted in the UFFS Campus Experiment Area between September 2014 and April 2015, and aimed to evaluate the accumulation of DM and to point out its characteristics of adaptability and high production capacity for the feeding of cattle and mainly dairy cows In the CANTUQUIRIGUAÇU region. Because it is a forage of high nutritional value presenting crude protein (CP) contents around 12%, and total digestible nutrients (TDN) close to 25%, and may be an important alternative, especially for dairy farmers. The characteristics of occupation of the territory favor the development of alternative production systems, because the region is highly occupied by family agriculture, due to the formation of large Agrarian Reform settlements. In the conformation of the agricultural profile, the dairy activity is very important for the farmers of the region in the composition of the family income, and in this sense the production of sufficient quality fodder is an obstacle to the progress of the activity in the region. The investments in feeding in the milk activity can add up to 70% of the total costs of the activity (EMBRAPA GADO DE LEITE). The search for cost reduction in dairy farming is a constant struggle of farmers and fishermen committed to the sustainable development of our agriculture. The Giant Mission has the desirable characteristics for a good production of dry matter (DM), without many investments, because it supports acidic and nutrient poor soils, which are characteristic of most Brazilian oxysols. The research delineated the productive profile of the species for the region, pointing to the giant missionary as a good option of perennial forage grass with high dry matter (DM) yield, accumulating in 228 days 22,401.5 kg.ha-1 of DM in Average accumulating 94.12 kg.ha-1 MS per day, every 7 (seven) days the overall mean was 658.86 kg.ha-1. For the monthly average, the DM deposition was similar to that obtained by cutting the cut reaching 652.18 kg.ha-1 at each cut, the general average was of 2,608.72 kg.ha-1 per month. In the MS deposition rate, most of the data were between 24 and 30%, with an overall average of 27% at each cut, and a monthly average of 26.89%. Therefore, considering that the Giant Mine presents good nutritional levels, and with a good productive management can guarantee the feeding of the animals and promote a good productivity of milk of quality without many additional expenses.
