Abstract

Soccer has a prominent role in Brazilian society, so that many sectors of society seek to link its image with it, so much so that the Medici government transformed the three-time champion in Mexico in a victory of the nation and military dictatorship. This research seeks to analyze the coverage of Jornal A Voz da Serra about the Brazilian Football Selection between April and August 1970, and the appropriation of the military dictatorship of the results obtained in the field, also analyzing the positioning of the newspaper from the possible contributions of the selection propaganda of the dictatorship. We also seek to problematize the sense of belonging and national identity produced by the Brazilian selection and the way the dictatorship appropriates it. For this, this research organizes a theoretical base about the importance of the newspaper as object of study, of the necessity of an analysis of the discourse contained in it, for then, to analyze the sports matters related to the Brazilian soccer selection and that has connection with the ideological politics of the military civil dictatorship in the period before the 1970 World Cup, during the event, and its developments in the following months in the newspaper A Voz da Serra.
