Segregados da civilização: o imperialismo e o litígio racial no Contestado (1906 – 1916)

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the modernizing imperialist offensive on the Contestado region considering the paradigm of the “racial superiority” as the fundamental domination method of the European and North-American capital expansion over the non-developed parts of the world and its role on the conjecture of the war involving the military forces and the country caboclo people. Understanding how the several interest involved are articulated between the imperialist capital and the National/local authorities and, by that, what measures are taken to make the modernizing plane effective under the prejudice of the local people had as incapable, due to their cultural and social characteristics, to be part of the economic model proposed and wanted by the local and national dominant classes. The sources analyzed are reverent to General Fernando Setembrino de Carvalho, considered by the military history the responsible for leading the army to its victory, what has shown us how the army’s campaign was justified in this occasion. In order to do that, we analyzed how imperialism and the marginalization process engine by its racial superiority ideology work on Contestado considering the presence of the railway company Brazil Railway Company and what its consequences over the local people, once rebelled, in order that relate the army activities during the war on the annihilation of the harmful element that prevented the region any development in industrial and civilized terms.
