A Alemanha no entre guerras: a representação do trauma no romance O caminho de volta de Erich Maria Remarque

Abstract

The present monograph promotes a memorial approach of the trauma that occurred in the First World War and its representation in the literary work O Caminho de Volta, by Erich Maria Remarque during the interwar period in Germany. The objectives of the research are: To substantiate the memory of the War as a trauma from the literature The Way Back in the context between wars. To relate the novel to the historiography on the topic. To observe the context in which the German State was inserted at the time. To prove how Remarque's participation in the war influenced the preparation of his postwar novel. To demonstrate how he perceives his own experience in the trenches. To see how the novelist was changed by the war and how he personally perceives that change. To preserve the dimension of the trauma and the construction of a traumatic memory of the conflict. Conducted through reading and bibliographic analysis, scientific, biographical and literary texts, the survey found that, in O Caminho de Volta, Remarque justifies how the First World War is synonymous with catastrophe and the damage caused haunt the next years. The analysis corroborates the proposed problem, since the memory of the experience in the trenches is narrated as a trauma, building a negative view of the event in order to alert, in an attempt to prevent its occurrence again.
