Arquivar, narrar, rememorar: um olhar sobre o Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de Getúlio Vargas (1995-2010)

Abstract

This dissertation comes to the notions of present stories in the historiographical production of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Getúlio Vargas (IHGGV), founded in the 1990s in the city of Getúlio Vargas, which is located in the Alto Uruguai region, in the north of Rio Grande do Sul, For that, we analyzed government magazines published by the supporting institution containing the minutes and speeches given at anniversaries and formal ceremonies. The IHGGV is a part of the recent foundation movement of historic and geographical institutes at municipal level that started to multiply in the 1980s. The foundation of the institution happens closely related to the mobilization of a group of professors, which, in partnership with the current municipal administration, start from the need and investment of rescuing / narrating the history of the city and the wish to produce and institutionalize memory. We maintain that the foundation is not only in tune with presentism, as is also the cause and consequence of the transition to the presentist historicity regime characterized by attachment to the memory and command of the category of the past. It is known that the institution arises from the necessity of memory in its archival character, driven by preserving, narrating, archiving, remembering and rescuing it. Lastly, we conclude that the historiographical production of the institute is marked by the symbiosis between the modern concept of history (but that still incorporates the old tops of history magistra vitae) and the presentist historicity regime.
