Abstract/Resumen: The feminist movement has its starting point in the demand for equal rights for women. Established by the first women’s movement, feminism in the 19th and 20th centuries had as its goals equality of rights, expansion of schooling opportunities, of instruction, better working conditions and, above all, the possibility for women to vote. Only after World War II did the first representatives of a women’s movements in modernity respond to the demand for legal equality. One of the first representatives was Simone de Beauvoir who, in 1949, published her philosophical treatise The second sex. In it she calls on women to no longer be satisfied with their condition of “others”, as a complement to men, but to demand their equality in society. Starting from this thinker, the present work will seek to develop a reflection concerning the struggle for equal rights that is not far from the struggle for women’s freedom. Understanding these concepts in the philosophy and, mainly, in the work of this singular philosopher is fundamental because freedom is the first premise of human existence, and this condition of free man is what allows the foundation of a morality. As asserts Beauvoir, wanting freedom is also wanting the others free. Thus, in this work we’ll seek to reflect upon the life and work of Simone de Beauvoir in order to comprehend how her life was similar to the lives of 20th century women with respect to expectations and propositions that society puts forward in relation to their existence as woman. We’ll also seek to deal with the philosophical assumptions that guide her work, assumptions which are here understood as founding concepts and that permeate her thought and writing. We will also briefly seek to make a reflection on the condition of the Brazilian woman in recent centuries, in order to reflect on the possibilities and philosophical assumptions, especially those constituted by the philosopher, which may support a feminin ethics based on the principle of freedom. These will be the main lines of this work.
