Abstract: | The aim of the study was to identify the hemodynamic, cardiovascular, sedative and stress effects of gabapentin in a single oral dose in healthy cats, and whether the administration of the drug facilitates the manipulation of this animals to perform cardiovascular exams. The prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study was performed in ten healthy cats that, after inicial screening, were allocated into three experimental groups: placebo, gabapentin 5 mg/Kg and gabapentin 10 mg/Kg. The animals were evaluated before the admnistrartion of the solution, two, three and four hours after, evaluating physiological, electrocardiographic, echodopplercardiographic, pressure, sedatives and degrees of stress, comparing the obtain values between times and between groups. The highest sedation degree was observed two, three and four hours after administration of the solutions in the three groups, which was associated with the cat friendly maneuvers used in this study. There was a higher stress degree in cats submited to electrocardiogram compared to phisical exam and echocardiogram in the three groups. There was a reduction in body temperature on physical examination and an increase in the amplitude of the T wave on the electrocardiogram after the administration of gabapentin 5 mg/Kg, which was not considered significantly in this study. There was no change in the echocardiographic parameters. The administration of gabapentin at doses of 5 mg/Kg and 10 mg/Kg does not interfeer with hemodynamic and cardiovascular parameters in healthy cats and emphasizes the importance of using cat friendly management to perform cardiovascular exams in cats. |
