Abstract: | OBJECTIVES: To identify the prevalence of binge drinking among medical students and the factors associated with this use. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study with medical students in Brazil. A web-based survey was sent out using the following questionnaires: sociodemographic, AUDIT-C, PHQ-2 and ASSIST. The association between variables was analyzed for the chi-square test, assuming a significance level of 5% (p <0.05). RESULTS The prevalence of binge drinking was 57.35% (n = 2.775) in the sample. There was a positive association between binge drinking in both sexes, being homo or bisexual, not having a partner, high family income (> R$ 10.000), not living with the family, not using the “quota system”, repeating university stage, physical activity, poor or regular sleep quality, positive PHQ-2, abuse in adulthood, needed help of a psyquiatry professional and use of cannabis, tobacco and cocaine. CONCLUSIONS This study found a high prevalence of binge drinking among medical students. Most of the key factors were associated with this practice in the sample, demonstrating the risks of the habit are underestimated and prevention, guidance and control practices are needed |
