Da imprensa ao voto: a eleição presidencial de 1960 nas páginas do jornal Folha de São Paulo

Abstract

The Brazilian presidential election held in 1960 records the last time the Brazilian people can go to the ballot box to democratically elect a president before the Civil-Military Coup of 1964. The present work aims to understand the performance of the written press within the Brazilian political context of the early 1960s, and how it influenced the results of the polls. To achieve the research objectives, journalistic sources published by the newspaper Folha de São Paulo between 1959 and 1961 were used through Political History. The political forces reorganized by the country's redemocratization in 1945 strained the national political scenario throughout the 1950s, influenced by external factors inserted in the context of the Cold War. Thus, the press reflected and assimilated the aspirations of these political groups, consequently influencing all Brazilian public opinion during and after the period discussed here.
