Gaudêncio, um bandido social na região de Erechim

Abstract

This dissertation addresses the theme of social banditry in the northern region of Rio Grande do Sul, especially in the region of Erechim. It is considered the political context of Rio Grande do Sul during the governments of the Republican Party of Rio Grande do Sul, specifically the management of Borges de Medeiros until mid 1927, marking authoritarianism and positivism as factors for the appointment of public managers in the city of Erechim. The relationship between social banditry and the politics of the time is made through the figure of Gaudêncio dos Santos, who, in view of the effects of the Federalist Revolutions that occurred in southern Brazil, ended up settling in the region of Erechim. The research was carried out based on historical documents researched in public archives, literature review and interviews. The hypothesis of the work is that Gaudêncio dos Santos represents an example of a guerrilla bandit due to the fact that he fought in the civil war and was also driven by personal interests that could be achieved through his participation in the conflict.
