Jesus em dupla voz: o romance carnavalizado de José Saramago

Abstract

The research proposes to analyze the literary work of José Saramago, “The Gospel According to Jesus Christ”, whose plot recounts the biblical stories through a new guise, that is, coated with a peculiarly worldly cosmovision and, why not, carnivalized, once which is concerned with focusing especially on the relationships of an all-too-human Jesus with two characters: his father, “Jose”, and his companion, Maria of Magdala. One thinks of the literary carnivalization of Saramago's work under Bakhtin's philosophical bias, since the elements that configure the carnival worldview theorized by the author, such as, for example, irony and desacralization, are found in Saramago, especially in “The Gospel According to Jesus Christ”. In this sense, at first, the speeches of these two characters are verified in order to understand how they influence the imaginary construct of this dethroned Saramaguian Jesus, or even without a crown, that is, from the polyphonic possibility, a theory also elaborated by Bakhtin in “Problems of Dostoevsky's poetics”, whose fundamental characteristic is the "gaze" of voices and consciences, independent of the author, that dialogue within the text, consequently, a selection is made of the speeches that play a relevant role in what concerns Jesus and the linguistic mechanism is observed in the character construction process.
