Perfil dos pacientes internados em unidade de terapia intensiva por COVID-19 e a utilização desse serviço de saúde em um município gaúcho

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) due to COVID-19 in the municipality of Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul. The study also explores the utilization of ICU beds and investigates admissions to these beds throughout the months of the pandemic. This quantitative, observational study employs an ecological and descriptive design. Data were obtained from the Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS) regarding COVID-19 ICU admissions from March 2020 to December 2021. The average value of the Hospital Admission Authorization (AIH), the average length of hospitalization for paid AIHs during the period, and the monthly lethality rate were calculated. Additionally, the clinical and epidemiological profile of COVID-19 ICU patients was analyzed, and a ranking of municipalities with the highest number of admissions in Passo Fundo was conducted. Among 1,766 admissions, June 2021 had the highest number (178). Approximately 50% of the patients were from Passo Fundo. The majority were males, above 65 years old, and of white ethnicity. A notable observation was the lethality rate, peaking in May 2020 (70%). The average AIH value showed fluctuations, reaching its highest point in December 2021. Therefore, the study may contribute to better hospital cost management and ensure greater universal access to healthcare in future pandemics. This is crucial considering the impact and the escalating demand for hospital care during the COVID-19 pandemic, given the current underfunding associated with SUS
