Vivências +: reflexões masculinas sobre a paternidade, a família e a saúde frente ao HIV/AIDS

Abstract

The actions focused on healthcare for the population living with HIV/AIDS have gained increasing scientific, political, and social significance over the years, thus contributing significantly to the containment of the multiplication and worsening of the infection. However, one of the major challenges faced in promoting health related to addressing the illness is the social stigma associated with men and their masculinity, which, as a rule, follows a sequence of socially established norms, defining and encouraging high-risk behaviors. These behaviors have an impact on personal relationships, family formation, future life perspectives, and conceptions of dealing with the HIV/AIDS experience. It is intended that the results of this investigation contribute to the strengthening of public policies focusing on men's health and healthcare practices. To achieve this goal, the objective is to understand how cultural aspects influence men afflicted by HIV/AIDS in the strategic planning of life regarding fatherhood and family. Additionally, the study aims to analyze, based on Medical Anthropology, the possible implications of these aspects for health promotion. This is a qualitative, descriptive study guided by the theoretical framework of Medical Anthropology. The sample consisted of 23 men living with HIV/AIDS. The study was conducted at a specialized HIV/AIDS care center in the Southern region of Brazil. Through the men's accounts, it is possible to illustrate how the infection/illness impacts social, economic, and cultural relationships, affecting the continuity of life, health, family bonds, and the possibility of fatherhood. The study also elucidates the coping strategies adopted by these men to ensure the continuity of life and highlights the importance of being a father, even in the face of illness.
