Abstract

This work investigates the historical-cultural context of the creation of the Smith-Waite tarot deck created in 1909 and the artistic process of Pamela Colman Smith, delving deeper into the influences that may have guided her choices when constructing the illustrations for the Queens' cards, as these demonstrate how tarot decks follow a symbolic pattern, but there is also a breakdown of standardized representations. Each queen has a unique artistic expression, especially in the scenery that makes up the central figure. The research highlights the gaps in knowledge and the occult nature of tarot, which influenced Pamela Colman Smith's choices in her creative process. Investigating the symbolism and cultural references present in Smith's deck. The work goes through the hypotheses of the emergence of tarot decks, highlighting aspects of this object that touch on the field of visual arts. To check the influence of other decks from the Renaissance period, on the Smith-Waite tarot. The author Erwin Panofsky and also Carlo Ginzburg are used as references for the iconographic and iconological analysis of the card paintings. And other authors who propose analogies between images of different origins, in search of survivals, transformations and memory of the tarot, in order to situate it as an object of study pertinent to historiography.
