Agropecuária na região sul do Brasil: um olhar a partir do censo agropecuário de 2017

Abstract

The monograph aims to present characteristics of agriculture in the Federation Units of the South region: Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. For this purpose, secondary data prepared by IBGE in the 2017 Agricultural Census was accessed. The selected data are included in the economic dimensions, social and environmental. The aim is to describe social, economic and environmental characteristics of agriculture in the regions studied, taking into account the context of family and non-family farming. To this end, it presents a literature review on growth and development, dynamics of agriculture in the South region, and family farming. In methodological terms, a bibliographical review and a documentary study with secondary data were carried out, using information available in the IBGE Automatic Recovery System (SIDRA), with these data being treated with descriptive statistics. Among the economic results, it appears that family farming accounts for more than 79% of the total number of establishments in the three territories, and accounts for at least 74% of people employed in agriculture. In the economic sphere, the five main agricultural products in the South region, in order of importance in terms of production value, are soybeans in grains, corn in grains, cattle for slaughter, dry leaf tobacco and pigs. In the social sphere, there is a predominance of males and older people among those who manage agricultural establishments and the level of education showed a high literacy rate, with significant percentages of reading and writing knowledge. And finally, in the environmental sphere it was possible to notice that the percentages of agricultural establishments that reported having some type of water resources are high. However, the percentage of those working in organic production is still low.
