Vestindo o império: o papel da indumentária de Catarina II na consolidação de poder (1762–1772)

Abstract

The present work aims to analyze the clothing created by Catherine II of Russia, through the iconography designed in the first decade of her government (1762 to 1772). It seeks to emphasize the use of imperial jewelry and clothing as an affirmation of legitimacy and authority during the construction of a government after a palace coup, in order to understand the nuances that permeate the construction of a woman's identity as sovereign of the Russian empire. The research approach used was a bibliographical analysis and the study of portraits and pieces of clothing based on a historiographical and artistic perspective through the use of the biography of Catherine II and her iconography in the Hermitage Museum. In addition to understanding aspects of the fashion field. The identity of authority and army commander was elaborated with the aspects of the great Russian matriarch as a political tool, developing the change in the perception of symbolism in the Russian court and the consonance between tradition and modernity
