Do conflito à memória: os patrimônios da Cabanagem como lugares de resistência em Belém do Pará

Abstract

This monograph examines the relationship between the biography of cultural heritage, social memory, and heritage education through the study of the Cabanagem, understood as a conflict heritage and as an expression of the political and symbolic disputes that shape the history of the Amazon. The research is grounded in the understanding that heritage is not neutral but a social construction permeated by processes of selection, exclusion, and silencing, which have historically privileged elitist narratives while marginalizing popular experiences. It discusses how the patrimonialization of the Cabanagem has been marked by verticalized institutional practices that emphasize monumentality at the expense of the everyday experiences of the groups that sustain cabano memory. The study is organized into two chapters: the first contextualizes historical-cultural heritage, memory, conflict, and their contemporary implications; the second analyzes conflict heritage and its relationship with local populations. Through examples such as the Memorial da Cabanagem and the Circular project, the research highlights the gap between preservation policies and community participation, despite institutional discourse that claims otherwise. Drawing on authors who advocate critical and democratic perspectives on heritage, the study argues that heritage education is an essential tool for expanding access, promoting narrative plurality, and strengthening collective identities. It concludes that valuing cabano heritage requires transcending traditional management models by incorporating interdisciplinary practices, community engagement, and the recognition of the multiple forms of memory production present in Amazonian territories.
