| Resume: | Esta dissertação investiga as exigências morais para a resistência ao governo civil em Henry David Thoreau, partindo de seu ensaio Resistência ao Governo Civil e de suas vivências filosóficas. O estudo analisa como a consciência individual, guiada por princípios inalienáveis, fundamenta o direito de resistir a um Estado considerado injusto, especialmente em contextos como a escravidão e a guerra contra o México. Além disso, explora a noção de um Estado razoável em Thoreau, e como este mesmo Estado pode tornar-se moralmente aceitável ao respeitar a integridade e a autonomia do indivíduo. A pesquisa dialoga com interpretações de autores do século XIX e contemporâneos, posicionando Thoreau como um pensador essencial para a filosofia política e os movimentos de desobediência civil. |
| Abstract: | This dissertation investigates the moral requirements for resistance to civil government in Henry David Thoreau, based on his essay Civil Disobedience and his philosophical experiences. The study analyzes how individual conscience, guided by inalienable principles, underpins the right to resist a state considered unjust, especially in contexts such as slavery and the war against Mexico. Furthermore, it explores the notion of a reasonable state in Thoreau, and how this same state can become morally acceptable by respecting the integrity and autonomy of the individual. The research engages with interpretations by 19th-century and contemporary authors, positioning Thoreau as an essential thinker for political philosophy and civil disobedience movements. |
