Entre a chegada e a partida: o Sul do Brasil na rota das migrações haitianas contemporâneas

Abstract

By looking at the history of Haitian immigration in southern Brazil, this research seeks to understand the recent flow of Haitian migration to Brazil. It aims to investigate the arrival of Haitians in southern Brazil, why this migratory flow occurred, and then why this departure will occur from 2015 onwards. Haitian immigration in southern Brazil, especially in the western region of Santa Catarina, is a subject of study that addresses many aspects such as reception and the degree of acceptance in Brazilian society. Here, we propose a perspective that addresses work, studies and family. It is worth mentioning that one of the first flows of people of Haitian nationality arrived in Brazil after the earthquake of January 2010, but these immigrants were mostly parents, students and business people who came in search of a better life. We also seek to understand why this departure from Brazil to other destinations such as the United States occurred. The methodological approach is based on the stories of two Haitian men who came to Brazil in search of a better life, but after a few years they took the family they had raised in Brazil to another country in Jordan, where they left Brazil to migrate to the United States. They were named Jean and Jacques, and were parents, students, workers and migrants here in Brazil. The initial results indicate the experience of leaving their country of origin and arriving in a foreign country, the migration process and the trajectory of these men's families.
