| Abstract: | Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from insulin resistance, which creates a state of chronic low-grade inflammation. In addition to pharmacological treatment, regular physical exercise plays a significant role in glycemic control, improvement of quality of life, and modulation of purinergic system parameters. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of physical exercise as a non-pharmacological therapeutic approach on the inflammatory profile, purinergic system, and cytokine profile in elderly female patients with T2DM. The sample consisted of 32 participants aged 60 years or older, divided into two groups according to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ): the Active Group (AG, n=16), who engage in at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week, and the Non-Active Group (NAG, n=16), who do not achieve this recommendation. Anthropometric variables, body fat percentage via bioelectrical impedance analysis, purinergic system components (activities of enzymes that hydrolyze AMP, ADP, ATP, and extracellular ATP), and serum concentrations of the cytokines IL-6, IL-10, and IFN-γ were evaluated. The results demonstrated sociodemographic homogeneity between the groups, with a statistically significant difference observed only in body fat percentage, which was higher in the AG. Regarding purinergic metabolism, the NAG presented significantly higher AMP enzymatic activity compared to the AG. Conversely, the AG evidenced enhanced Adenylate Energy Charge (AEC) indices and a better ATP/AMP ratio. Basal serum cytokine levels did not show statistically relevant variations between the groups. In conclusion, regular physical activity is associated with beneficial changes in purinergic metabolism and cellular energy indices in elderly women with T2DM, reinforcing its role as a relevant non-pharmacological strategy in the management of the disease, although the basal inflammatory profile may be influenced by persistent adiposity in both groups. |
