Liberdade de escolha: a renúncia à liberdade e a servidão voluntária como sintoma da sociedade do espetáculo

Abstract

Freedom, according to Sartre's assumptions, is the natural condition of human existence, that is, man is doomed to be free. By not having an essence, but characterizing himself as Nothingness, he is constantly projecting himself through his freedom of choice. However, doing this is not gratuitous and makes man responsible for everything he does. Free and responsible for himself, man is distressed, and in the attempt to escape from his condition he makes use of subterfuges such as determinism, bad faith and voluntary servitude, seeking to remain oblivious of his own condition. In this way, man becomes a spectator of the society of the spectacle which puts at his disposal and intensifies in several ways, control mechanisms so that he remains so, in a way that he presents an excess of adaptation to reality as it presents itself. This passivity, however, is a choice, that of serving voluntarily and subjecting his freedom to the other. This choice materializes a process of voluntary servitude so that man prefers to give up his freedom of choice, subjecting himself to the massification that the society of the spectacle offers him.
