A suinocultura nas páginas da revista “Celeiro Catarinense”, na década de 1970

Abstract

Pig farming is one of the most valuable branches for livestock and the economy of the country. In the western region of Santa Catarina this economic activity is well known and plays a fundamental role in the regional, state and national economy. Pig farming was the basis for the installation and settlement of agro-industries in this region, so it is very useful to study the various faces in which it has developed and how it influenced its consolidation. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze how pig farming was portrayed in the media that circulated at the time while undergoing through several transformations. In order to understand how the pig farming was fixed in the west of Santa Catarina, we used some tools and methods. In this study, through the analysis of a documentary source, the chosen journal was the magazine entitled “Celeiro Catarinense”, because it was being produced and disseminated in the city of Chapecó, a large pig farming center in the region. The analysis of this magazine was performed considering the breadth that pig farming was taking at the time, with the modernization and integration process between producers and agro-industries. This analysis allowed us to understand how pig farming was advertised on its pages and how it sought to reproduce its vision of economic development, always seeking to emphasize that in the West region a high quality pig is produced and that the region is prone to become a major hub of pork production. Therefore, we can consider that the present work contributes to an analysis about the consolidation of pig farming in the region and the processes that it underwent in the 1970s.
