Abstract: | This article aims to analyze the protagonist character Andrew Dufresne (Andy), of “Hope Springs Eternal: Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King” (1982), written by Stephen King, through the Apollonian and Dionysian impulses by philosopher, F Nietzsche in the work The birth of tragedy (1872). Andy had been sentenced to two life sentences for the double murder of his wife and lover. During the narrative, which is presented by Red, a smuggler from the Shawshank Penitentiary, it unfolds as manifestations in the figure of Andy, who according to our reading, are linked to the Apollonian in the cold and aesthetic beauty of his steps in prison, as well as Dionysians in the alleged construction of the fugue plan. Thus, from the bases of Nietzschean philosophical thought, we analyze the aforementioned work of Stephen King in order to validate theoretical and methodological instruments of the tragic visualizing the predominance, as well as the harmony and the confluence of these impulses throughout the narrative construction of the character of King. |
