Música e harmonia na República e nas Leis de Platão

Abstract

From reading Plato's Republic and Laws, it is observed that music can contribute to the education of new citizens and their functions in the city. Musical pleasure is, roughly speaking, one of the ways to educate sensitivity. This work explores the interconnection between education and harmony through music, aiming to reproduce beauty and balance in the formation of citizens. The objectives of this study are outlined in response to the relevance attributed to music as a pedagogical proposal capable of promoting harmony of the soul. The aim is, firstly, to analyze the characteristics of the musical form, identifying elements that enable the organization of the individual's soul. Next, we seek to understand to what extent this musical structure contributes to the formation of citizens in dialogues. To achieve these objectives, we adopted a bibliographical research method, exploring the works of Plato and other pertinent texts. A significant contribution of this study is the complementary approach to Platonic works, allowing a more comprehensive analysis of the theme of harmony in the soul. By connecting insights from the Republic (Book II) and Laws (Book III), we can enrich our understanding of how music influences the formation of citizens and the organization of the city.
