Interseções entre o XIV fórum de estudos leituras de Paulo Freire (2012) e a Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul: o legado de Paulo Freire em debate no Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract

The overall objective of this final thesis is to investigate the relationships between the pedagogical and political premises of the 14th Forum on the Readings of Paulo Freire (2012) and the Federal University of Fronteira Sul in the context of building a Popular Public University in northern Rio Grande do Sul through REUNI (Program to Support Restructuring and Expansion Plans for Federal Universities), documenting the Forum as a reaffirmation of universities within the Popular Education movement in Rio Grande do Sul. The Paulo Freire Readings Study Forum has been a traveling event in Rio Grande do Sul since 1999, held annually, preferably in May, at partner universities in the state in memory of the death of educator Paulo Freire. The Federal University of Fronteira Sul hosted the event in 2012 with the theme “Popular Education and Social Transformation”. Given this context, this research proposes a qualitative methodology based on a bibliographic and documentary approach, utilizing primary and secondary sources from both the event under study and the institution with which it seeks to establish intersections, drawing on authors from the region such as Andreola (2025, 2022); Brandão (2012); Freire (2003, 2015, 2021, 2022); Freire (2024); Freitas (2024); Moretti (2018); Pereira (2025); Pitano (2018); Redin (2019); Souza (2015); Streck (2018, 2019) and Zitkoski (2019). The bibliographic and documentary analysis revealed that both the Forum and UFFS share common foundations, such as the training of teachers committed to social emancipation, democratic management that values participation and collective construction, the sharing of experiences that spans extension, teaching, culture, and research, which are part of a collective network that continues the work of Freire and the liberating ethical-political action that defines the Center for Another History.
