Abstract/Resumen: According to our studies some differences were noticed about the Portuguese Language Teaching, the first language, on the curriculum in the Proposta Curricular de Santa Catarina State. This difference is related to the name of the subject. While in Elementary School it’s called Portuguese Language, in Secondary School it is named Portuguese Language and Literature. On the paper we present and discuss the reasons for that difference and the impacts for the Literature Teaching. Apparently that distinction suggests there’s no place to approach Literature in Elementary School. Is that just a question related to the name of the subject which does not influence in the syllabus or is that the exclusion of the Literature teaching in the last years in Elementary School? The analysis is based on the Proposta Curricular de Santa Catarina, the annual planning of the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth grade and the textbooks used in class. It was possible to notice the most used textual genders and especially the place for the Literary text on Portuguese Language Teaching in the last years of Elementary School in Santa Catarina State. Through the analysis it’s possible to conclude that the literary text is not used with the properly emphasis. This means, it’s not used in the classes to develop the pleasure for reading or the pleasure for the language for example. What really happens is the use of the literary text as an excuse for the grammar teaching. In other words, the Portuguese Language is taught based on the grammar teaching.
